Genre Research PowerPoint

This PowerPoint was done by me and my group. The genre of the research is musicals. We researched common lighting, sound, mis-en-scene, camera shots and camera movements. In common musical films, characters are singing and dancing. Also, characters are in costumes and wear makeup. To create a happy spirited mood, high key lighting is used. An example of a classical all time favorite musical of mine is “The Lion King.”

Final chosen genre

Previously, my group members and I researched three genres. These genres were Crime, Mystery, and Musical.  After researching all of those genres we decided to go with mystery. We went with mystery because when we were brainstorming ideas for the genres mystery was the best idea out of all. Not only was it the best idea, but the idea was rational. We have the tools and means capable of doing this idea more than the others. We also liked the different clamps and conventions in this genre as well. The movies that we watched that fell under the mystery genre fit well with our movie idea.  In the mystery genre, they use close-up shots and naturalistic lighting. We felt like mystery was one of the best genres that engages with the audience. As people watch our film, we do not want them to get bored.

Genres we researched

The first genre that we are researching is musicals. In common musicals, to show actors dancing, pan movement and tracking shot is used to keep up with the dancing. By using eye-angle, audiences can experience the actors dancing like front-row seats. The lighting is generally bright (high-key lighting) to create a bright mood. Also, cinematic lighting is used to show drama between actors. Bounce lighting is used to reflect soft light onto an actor. Wide shots are often used to show locations especially to show where actors are singing. In pop-themed musicals, subtle props such as flowers are used. In action-themed musicals, props such as swords and shields are used. In most musicals, costumes are used to match the mood of the scene and role of the actor. Sound elements typically used are ballad and live music. I don't like musicals where every scene actors sing. However, I do like the lighting used. It creates a happy atmosphere. With all these facts, this is why we chose this genre.

One additional genre we're researching is Mystery. The mystery genre is typically when a mystery is being solved. The usual Camera shots in a mystery movie is wide shots to show the background. While camera angles have a large range. Some camera angles are an Ariel shot which establishes their location and close ups which exaggerate the close object. Movements in a mystery thriller usually have a tracking shot to show the moving of a person. Usually Customes range from detective outfits to everyday casual clothing. The lightening in mysteries are typically dark dim lightening or sometimes bright if it's being solved during the day. The actors are all a different type of people. Props usually used knifes, guns, ski mask, and other killing objects or even just plain note pads. The setting is typically woods, dark areas, or even just everyday places. One of the most important editing tactics is jump cuts from scene to scene to emphasize the correlation between the two. The sound is typically dark scary music to make the audience feel inside the movie. I love how this genre keeps me on the edge of my seat, it is so interesting. However, I don’t like how it tends to have the same plot twist. All in all, I hope we go with this because this is one of my favorite genres .

Narrowing down our pitches

It was very hard to narrow down to 2 pitches. We tried merging them together and unfortunately it didn't work until we looked at other trailers. Once we looked at other trailers and looked at other Aice media examples we decided to go with these two pitches. The first pitch is He met this girl thinking he was going to fall in love, the whole time she was plotting something sinister, something he might not survive. While the second pitch is Someone follows three teenage girls while getting ready to have fun at their first college party. One goes missing and now they can’t find her. Both of this pitches were great plus the incorporated all of what interested them. Out of the 3 pitch ideas these two was our favorites.

We narrowed down the three pitches into two. The first of those two pitches is, He met this girl thinking he was in love, the whole time she was plotting something sinister. Something he might not survive. We chose this pitch because we have a whole plan formulating on what we want to do. We want to have one of the female group members to trick someone, me, into falling in love with them while she plots with the other members to set me up. This is also a very rational choice as well. We did not want to do something too complicated that we can not finish within the allotted time. It is also the more rational idea because we can do this with the group members that we have. We also looked at other factor such as the props, costumes, make up and places where we were going to do the pitch. Looking at these factors and more we all decided that this was one of the top contenders.

The second pitch that we chose to do is, Someone who follows three teenage girls while getting ready to have fun at their first college party. One goes missing and now they can't find her. This was a very great pitch that we chose because it was a good one that we all agreed on. We combined our first round of pitches in order to make this one. We have a very solid plan that we have come up with and that we have decided is a very rational plan. We already have a location picked out, costumes picked out, and have the people we want int he film picked out as well. We have the ways we want to film mapped out and we know exactly where we want to go with the story. Knowing this makes it easier for us to make an opening scene to the film because we know what we want to do after the scene. This makes this one of the best pitch ideas that we can choose from.

After debating on which pitch was the best, we finally came to an agreement. The pitch that we agreed on was pitch number 3. The third pitch was, Someone follows three teenage girls while getting ready to have fun at their first college party. One goes missing and now they can’t find her. While deliberating, we found that pitch number three had the best ideas. We also felt confident with the pitch and the plans we had for the film.

Start of the final task

Hey there! I'm Kerin and I'm a junior. I attend Fort Lauderdale High. This year I finally found a group to work with. I am working with Kaliyah, Shaniyah, and Chad. The four of us combined get a lot of work done and have fun doing it. I'm taking AICE Media Studies because I'm really interested in learning how to film and editing. One thing I really like to do is cook. Cooking food for other people is my passion. I like to be creative in the kitchen so others are pleased. I intend to be creative in these upcoming projects as well.
My biggest achievement is leaning how to edit and add transitions to a film. I’ve gotten better at using PinnacleStudios, an editing software. I’ve learned so many things in PinnacleStudios such as cutting raw footages and adding titles. Adding effects was the most fun to do. The hardest process I had to achieve was learning how to add transitions. Without transitions, my film would’ve cane out choppy and unprofessional. It’s a long process but it ties the whole film together. Learning how to do all of these really made my last two projects fun. The end results came out good. With the flew flaws it had, I’m sure I’ll learn from it and apply it to the upcoming project.
A pitch is a term to describe an idea where a film is encapsulated in 25 words or less. The idea is brought to someone with power to do something with it. We have 3 pitches.
1. Michael and Naomi feel in love on their first date. The love was short lived once Naomi fell for Steven and Michael wanted nothing but Steven dead.
2.He met this girl thinking he was going to fall in love, the whole time she was plotting something sinister, something he might not survive.
3. Someone follows three teenage girls while getting ready to have fun at their first college party. One goes missing and now they can’t find her.
This is the start of my final task and thank you for reading.

Editing Blog

I walked into class thinking I was going to edit my commercial today but the computers had other plans. I don't know what happened but the computers wouldn't open up Pinnacle Studios. I didn't want to sit around and wait for class time to pass by. I decided to film the scenes I needed. I also re-filmed some scenes I thought were not good. I filled out the camera agreement paper and grabbed a camera. I also grabbed an SD card and my props from the class's closet. Luckily, the girl in my film already finished her commercial so I was able to film. I had to wait for her to dump her footage on the computers before getting started. After she was done, I let her change into the homecoming dress.

Originally, I had planned for a dance with the girl and boy but the boy was not in class today. I had to change that whole scene so that it could make sense for my commercial. I let the girl do the scene by herself. Instead of dancing, I filmed her modeling and repping Macy's clothing. I filmed in many different angles and movements for this scene. I want the audience to really see the dress and the expressions on the girl's face. After filming, I packed up my equipment and grabbed my props. I went back to class and began the dumping process. The computers were starting up really slow so it took me a while to dump. Finally, I imported my clips into my folder on the desktop.

Because we couldn't edit, we were told to transfer our media to a flash drive or to our google drive. My flash drive couldn't be recognized by the computer. I ended up having to transfer them to my google drive. I never done anything like this so I had to ask for help from another student. She came over and explained how to do the transfer. I was told to open up google drive and press 'drop new files'. The desktop folder popped up and I looked for my clips. After finding my clips I selected all and pressed continue. I waited about 5 minutes for it to finish. I successfully finished filming and now I'm waiting on instructions to begin editing.

Filming Blog #2

Past weekend, my group and I did not film. We were all too busy to fit filming in our schedule. One person had to work and I was out of town. Our scenes require everyone to be there. So, if one person can’t make it then we can’t film. We planned to film this weekend in the afternoon. It’s better for all of us since everyone is free until 6pm. We will check out a camera tomorrow since there will be no school for the rest of the week. We are instructed to return the camera next Monday. Unfortunately, we are not able to check out computers.

Because we are not able to check out computers, we will have to dump on Monday. Since everyone in the group lives far from the mall, Chad will meet up at Kaliyah’s house and I'll drive. Chad will then get in her car and they’ll drive to the mall and begin filming. We plan on spending 2 hours at the mall, and 2 hours at the beach. We will each bring a prop that’s needed. We are not wearing makeup in the video so makeup will not be needed. I am the only group member that doesn’t have beach attire so I will be purchasing during our time at the mall. The shopping bag will be part of our prop. After the two hours are up, we will drive to the beach. Additional people are invited to the beach to be apart of our film.

I don't have my own car so I'll have to wait for my mom to get home. She gets off at 1pm which is good because we meet up at 2pm. The mall is about 30 mins from my house. I will be driving to the mall by myself. This is our only chance and day to film. If one member doesn't show up, we plan on just continuing filming and that missing person will just have to film on their own. We cannot miss this filming day as there is no other. By 5pm, we should be wrapping things up as the sun begins to go down. Sunset begins at 5:28pm this weekend. We don't plan on filming when it gets dark.
